Although it varied over the years, the Kenton sound was always unmistakable. In 1960 he introduced his last experimental format, the Mellophonium orchestra, which despite the difficulties in keeping the four instruments in tune turned out to be another successful creation.
Such a radical new line-up required new arrangements and Kenton hired his former sideman Lennie Niehaus to prepare a book of standards for the orchestra. So pleased was Kenton with the results that he recorded 12 of Niehaus' structured and sophisticated charts for this album in July 1961 with a further six the following December. On Sophisticated Approach both sessions appear on one album for the first time.
