Chaloff was the premier baritone saxophonist of the hard-bop era but recorded just a few albums in his tragically short career.
One of the original Four Brothers, along with Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Herbie Stewart out of the Woody Herman band, his fiery and dynamic improvisations renewed interest in the instrument prior to the emergence of Gerry Mulligan.
This 1955 album was produced by Stan Kenton with a Boston-based cast in support and, while the date is full of hard-bop highlights, his extraordinarily sensitive version of Body And Soul is possibly the highlight of his career.
