Quadricromia comprises four of Italy’s young jazz stars in the making; Gianni Virone (soprano and tenor saxophone), Claudio Filippini (piano), Davide Liberti (double bass) and Mattia Barbiera (drums). The quartet’s eponymous debut album includes ten original compositions by the band.
All four players shine on Quadricromia, but for this group the emphasis is on the subtle nuances of group interplay; the infinite possibilities of ways in which the musicians can interact and contribute to the overall sound. This is reflected by the name - Quadricromia – which refers to a graphical process in which four shades of colour combine to create one image. For these musicians the music is a process, not a product. Their aim was and is to give life to a creative process in which the listener can participate.
The idea for the quartet was formed when saxophonist Gianni Virone met bass player Davide Liberti at a jam session and discovered a shared approach to improvisation that eschewed the traditional “theme – solo – theme” format in favour of the more collective approach that now defines their sound.
Soon after, Gianni met drummer Mattia Barbieri, who invited Gianni and Davide to play in a trio with him. The necessity to add more instrumental colour led them to enlarge their organic structure to that of a quartet. Gianni won a grant to study at the Nuoro Jazz seminar, where he soon came across a young pianist from Pescara Claudio Filippini, winner of the Urbani Prize, and Quadricromia was born.
