Classically trained, pianist and composer Neil Cowley came to jazz by way of distinctly non-classical soul and funk as a member of the Brand New Heavies and stints with Gabrielle and Zero 7. But Cowley is a man of his time, eschewing rigid musical definitions and focusing on the creative process.
A thoroughly modern and skilful player he is also a highly original writer, drawing inspiration from such diverse influences as Shostakovitch, Ahmad Jamal, Frank Zappa, Errol Garner and Tarak de Haidouks but always retaining his own voice, as the 14 original tracks on this album amply demonstrate.
This is a joyful trio performance with the accent on forceful melodies and suggestions of much more to come in the future.
