Garrett’s debut release on Nonesuch reflects the saxophonist composer’s long term fascination with the culture and music of China. He recorded the album following his first trip to the country last year and to bring the project to life he has assembled a cross cultural-group of world class musicians, including Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson and Mulgrew Miller.
On Beyond The Wall Garrett has mixed Chinese and Western instrumentation, creating an amalgam of styles that hang together effortlessly. “I’d always dreamt of going to mainland China” he says, “so I wrote a song about the wall to inspire me to get there…like writing out my plan. And this album is the result.” Some of the tracks refer specifically to his travels but overall the album is an impressionistic tale of culture and discovery, beautifully conveyed..
