Award-winning San Francisco-based guitarist / singer Joyce Cooling's seventh album reinforces her reputation as a versatile and eclectic stylist. A fixture in Bay Area venues for over a decade, her playing draws on a range of musical influences, combining jazz with Latin, Texan blues, funk, R&B and a smattering of worldbeat.
Her compositions on Revolving Door, written with Jay Wagner, are based on personal observations and experiences but Cooling is far too good a writer to follow a mawkish path, focusing instead on universal truths with characteristically lyrical, soulful and inventive singing. Coupled with a fluid, swinging, finger-picking guitar technique, filled with intricate interplay between hooky melodies and deep harmonies she’s enough to give ‘smooth jazz’ a good name.
