Basie always maintained that Joe Williams was one of the great urban blues singers but Williams always considered himself a balladeer. Both were right, and on his first Roulette album, the vocalist did it his way.
He selected 12 ballads and torch songs and wrapped his velvet baritone voice around the rich arrangements of Jimmy Mundy. A fine example of real jazz singing.
