With an adventurous 30 year career behind him Joe Lovano is one of today’s leading jazz saxophonists. This is his 18th album for Blue Note and his second collaboration with composer / arranger Gunther Schuller.
Streams Of Expression is a microcosm of jazz history in which Lovano unites disparate themes from his extensive discography and draws on evolutionary jazz styles ranging from the cool school to late-Coltrane.
The centre piece of the album is Schuller's singular arrangement of three movements from the Miles Davis classic Birth Of The Cool into a suite for Lovano's augmented Nonet but there is also ample opportunity to hear his fine contemporary trio work on three stand alone compositions.
