Throughout the ’60s, organist Jimmy McGriff recorded one great soulful album after another, usually with his own trio and quartet. One notable exception is this extraordinary album which launched the Solid State label.
Here McGriff is the sole soloist backed by an all-star big band, including several Basie alumni, superbly arranged by Manny Albam. The material is derived from the Count’s bluesier repertoire and ranges from the 1938 “Swingin’ the Blues” to later Neal Hefti hits like “Splanky” and “L’il Darlin’.”
