This album, recorded in December 1967, was Jackie McLean’s last for Blue Note and, like everything he did, it was infused with fresh ideas, swing, and unbridled passion. Jack DeJohnette drives this quintet without mercy and everyone rallies.
Trumpeter/composer Woody Shaw is especially powerful throughout this varied set of two originals each by McLean, Shaw, and Cal Massey. Less free than his more recent recordings, ‘Demon’s Dance’ is focused around modal, avant bop with more structured chord progressions, showing that McLean remained full of creative steam.
