If a jazz enthusiast was ever actually to be stranded on the fabled desert island with the choice of only one disc then this boxset (stretching the definition a bit) is the obvious choice, on several counts: for quality, it’s a Blue Note compilation so the reproduction will be first rate: for historical breadth, ranging from Sidney Bechet to Norah Jones (plus a few oddities but even they are interesting): for variety, with each of the six CDs representing different styles – classic vocals, swing bands, Latin jazz, post-bop cool sounds, ballads and legends: for price, at barely more than the cost of a double CD it’s a steal.
Mind you, you don’t have to be on a desert island to enjoy a ton of superb jazz, this one would do just as well.
